Chapter 19

This Old House

Julia felt like she should go jogging or at least attempt some sort of physical activity to keep her arteries from clogging completely, but she was pretty sure she couldn’t move.

When Opal had promised her a big hot breakfast, she had no idea that meant three kinds of breakfast meat, marmalade toast, and a thick gravy poured over eggs.

It was delicious at the time, but the meal now sat like a huge gravy meatball in Julia’s stomach that made her feel both incredibly satisfied and gluttonous. The need to unbutton her shorts suggested that she should have more strongly resisted the last few sausage links “that would have been a shame to waste.”

The two cups of coffee with heavy cream probably didn’t help, but Opal hadn’t lied. The coffee was good and there was plenty of it.

Julia now sat at the edge of town, a green sign reading “You’ve Made a Friend in Friendly” bidding her farewell with its ghostly figures’ arms raised in goodbye. She didn’t know what to do with her time, but was sure that she wasn’t ready to go. Her reluctance to drive past the town limits sign was a pretty good indication that she wasn’t ready to climb out of its spiritual wormhole quite yet.

Julia had had the best sleep of her life in the Rose Room, the heavy comforter and thick drapes burying her in a blissful darkness that blocked out everything except for the smell of bacon and fresh ground coffee that, when combined, were strong enough to finally entice her out of bed a few hours ago.

It had taken her a minute to remember where she was. At first she had felt like had traveled back in time to her grandparents’ house: the lace doily under the alarm clock was almost identical to the one that lay between the nightstand and clock in the guest room that she slept in on their farm. Once a few roses came into view, however, Julia remembered where she was. Opal loved roses; her grandmother preferred lilies.

Julia and her sisters had spent many a happy weekend exploring the forty acres of Georgia countryside owned by Evelyn’s parents. Half of it was transformed into farmland and the other half left to grow in the wild and unruly manner that her mother detested.

Liv, Georgia and Julia would spend hours playing in the shallow creek that ran through their grandparents’ property, arranging rocks into natural beach homes for their Barbie dolls who sunbathed and took an occasional dip to swim alongside the water spiders.

Even at a young age, Julia was aware of the tension between her mother and grandmother, Mabel. Accusations of snobbish behavior by a daughter who thought herself too good for her humble upbringing were passively tossed around during family dinners.

Julia remembered asking Liv what snob meant and not really getting an answer. Her oldest sister instead distracted her with a promise to look for the new litter of kittens tucked away safely somewhere in their grandparents’ hay loft.
